Abstract
Project Title: Tetra Ski
Description: The University of Utah Rehabilitation Center will introduce the world's first powered alpine sit ski to adaptive ski programs throughout the United States. Innovative control systems will offer skiing independence for individuals with tetraplegia. The Tetra Ski Project will lease 3 Tetra Skis to 9 adaptive ski program partners for shared use during the 2018/2019 ski season and include comprehensive and mandatory Tetra Ski training for instructors and participants. The Tetra Ski represents a paradigm shift in understanding the capacity for individuals with complex disabilities to have dynamic and independent control over a high performance piece of ski equipment. Partners will be chosen based on criteria that considers location, experience with complex disabilities, ability to attend training, a willingness to form new partnerships with local rehabilitation and engineering programs, and an interest in promoting this new technology. The Tetra ski will be acquired from a not for profit company set up with the help of the University of Utah to commercialize products conceived through the University of Utah Rehabilitation Center's Assistive Technology Initiative.
Outcomes/Goals: 1. Deploy 3 skis to 9 United States adaptive ski programs for shared use during the 2018/2019 ski season. 2. Deliver a multi-day training program for adaptive ski instructors representing each of the partner programs. 3. Deliver a multi-day training program for adaptive skiers at a national adaptive ski training event.
Relevance to Mission: The Tetra Ski restores independence and control to skiers with high tetraplegia.
