Project Title: Housing and ADA Accessibility Program for People Living with SCI

Program Description: The Center for Independent Living of Broward (CILBroward), is a South Florida 501(c)(3) nonprofit helping people with disabilities of all ages fulfill their goals of independence and self-sufficiency. CILBroward’s service provision stems from the Independent Living Philosophy which empowers people with disabilities to choose their goals, take responsibility for their actions and their results.

CILBroward respectfully requests $48,250 from the Craig H. Nielson Foundation to expand its Housing and ADA Accessibility Program. Generous funding is for barrier removal and installation of smart technology of up to ten apartments allowing more individuals with SCI and physical disabilities to remain in their homes, find employment, gain financial freedom for complete independent living.

Without this program, clients are more likely to be forced to move into a nursing home, increasing their cost of care. Additionally, this grant highlights the unrecognized, unaddressed need for independent housing for younger people with SCI and other disabilities by focusing additional resources on resolving this need.

Expected outcomes for the Housing ADA Accessibility Program are:

1. 10 apartments leased by CILBroward will be made wheelchair accessible and subleased to individuals with SCI.
2. 80% of clients will live independently, preventing them from having to live with family or move into nursing homes.
3. 100% of clients will receive benefits counseling and access to employment opportunities.
4. 80% of clients will become employed or enrolled in a job training program within 60 days, increasing their financial freedom.
