Abstract
In this proposed Trail Access Project, the Accessible Trails Foundation (ATF) plans to help individuals with SCI build an outdoor exploring community to take advantage of the scenic trails of southern Nevada’s beautiful federal parks surrounding Las Vegas. To do this our goal is to purchase specialized outdoor wheelchairs for participants to use on natural-surface trails during six controlled events in federal parks such as Lake Mead National Recreational Area, the Desert National Wildlife Refuge, and Red Rock Canyon National Conservation Area. Each of these parks are currently partners with ATF in a federal Recreational Trails Program grant in which we are assessing selected trails for accessibility characteristics.

The selected outdoor wheelchair models are arm-powered with levers and one will include electric assist. The wheelchair models will be customizable for use by paraplegics and partial quadriplegics, and each model can be pushed for partial or full assistance. A Joelette specialty trail chair is also included for use by those that require full assistance of two or more helpers. An enclosed box trailer is included for transport and storage of the equipment.

Our goal is to provide access to selected scenic trails to help individuals with SCI get outdoors in places they might not normally be able to experience because of lack of information about access, lack of personal confidence in exploring outdoors, or inappropriate adaptive equipment.
