Title: Empower SCI Summer Residential Rehabilitation Program

Description: Since 2012, Empower Spinal Cord Injury (SCI) has offered traditional and innovative therapeutic services to adults following a spinal cord injury. Through Empower SCI Summer Residential Rehabilitation Program (SRRP), we provide the knowledge, tools, support, and strength which help those with chronic spinal cord injury needs to live a happy, independent and meaningful life.

The time period after a spinal cord injury is often fraught with medical comorbidities, emotional despair, and focus on survival, which creates significant barriers toward establishing a purposeful future. SRRP provides participants with an opportunity to return to a meaningful life when they are ready to move forward. We accomplish this by providing participants with tools to return to a meaningful life as part of an intensive summer residential rehabilitation model (1-2 weeks long) that addresses both physical and emotional well-being.

SRRP features include:
• Formal one-on-one physical therapy and occupational therapy
• Group-work that allows participants to work together on common goals and form lasting support networks
• Recreational activities / group activities led by peers and program alumni. The residential nature of SRRP allows participants to work toward their goals 24 hours a day

This grant will support 4 areas of the Summer Residential Rehabilitation Program (SRRP):
(1) Support for Empower's SRRP Peer Mentors for both the New York and Montana sites in 2020
(2) Improving upon Empower's SRRP Recreational Activities (surfing, paddling and cycling)
(3) Funding for a Research Assistant to help determine the impact of SRRP on participants at both the New York and Montana programs
(4) Support for the Program Director during this period of growth and enhanced capacity

Outcomes: Overall, Empower SCI's SRRP provides a unique opportunity for individuals with spinal cord injuries to participate in an intensive rehabilitation experience surrounded by goal-oriented peers at a time in their recovery when they are ready to capitalize on positive change.

Specifically, goals established for this grant proposal are the following:
1. Greater than 80% of Empower SCI’s SRRP participants will demonstrate an improvement in self-efficacy following a successful adaptive cycling and adaptive surf programs (with a custom Waveski / a stand up paddle board specifically modified to accommodate the unique needs of individuals with tetraplegia).
2. Empower SCI will broaden its impact and demonstrate improved quality of life and/or participation in greater than 18 participants in the 2020 SERRP programming.
3. Greater than 80% of participants will express improvement in community participation following the Empower SRRP 2020 program, as a result of reported satisfaction with peer-led programs which focus on social outings, the educational series, and daily recreational activity support.
