Abstract
Support from the Neilsen Foundation will help Paralyzed Veterans empower women Veterans by creating the pilot of a wellness retreat: the WE Served: Women Veterans Retreat in August or September of 2019. The retreat will empower 50 female Veterans with SCI/D to strive for success in every aspect of their lives through a four-day (Tuesday morning-Saturday morning) series of informative workshops, activities, mentoring, and motivational speakers on issues facing female Veterans with SCI/D. The women Veteran-only format will give participants space to talk openly and without judgement and build community with women with similar experiences. The highlight of the event will be lectures from female VIPs and inspiring Paralyzed Veterans members. In addition to these VIP speakers, the event will include lectures from Paralyzed Veterans’ in-house experts.

As a result of this program, 50 female Veterans with SCI/D will participate in the retreat. 100% of these participants will learn something new that they will be able to implement in their daily lives, and programming will significantly and meaningfully improve participant quality of life by providing useful resources and one-on-one mentoring, measured by the results from post-event surveys. Both of these outcomes will be measured through post-event surveys.

Much like the Neilsen Foundation, all of Paralyzed Veterans’ programs are designed to support people with SCI/D, and this first of its kind event has been designed to address a gap in existing programming. While many programs exist for women with disabilities or female Veterans, we have seen through our research that there is currently no other program that focuses specifically on serving women Veterans with SCI/D. This program will support the Neilsen Foundation's goal of helping women Veterans with SCI/D live independently and with greater emotional and physical well-being by giving them the tools they need to address a wide variety of unique challenges in their lives. This program will connect participants with programs designed to address their needs and help build a community of women Veterans facing similar challenges who can offer support and advice.
