Abstract
The SCI Adaptive Sports Expansion in Alaska Project will allow increase services Challenge Alaska currently provides to Alaskans with SCI. This expansion will not only allow us to serve greater numbers of people living with SCI, but it will allow us to better serve those with higher level injuries with increased independence within that sport or activity. Challenge Alaska proposes purchasing equipment that will cover five different sport areas; shooting, wheelchair sports, alpine skiing, sled hockey and water skiing., and accessories that will allow more independence for those with higher level injuries. We anticipate that this equipment will allow us to serve an additional 11 people living with SCI (25% increase) who have not previously participated in at least one of these five sports. Specifically, we will be able to increase independent involvement for those with higher level SCI in adaptive shooting, sled hockey, alpine skiing and water skiing. Additional funds are requested to assist with the cost of modifying and adapting the equipment to best meet the needs of each individual that it’s paired with as well as training and support in using the equipment safely. Challenge Alaska's mission is to improve the lives of people with disabilities, their families and the whole community through adaptive sports, therapeutic recreation and education. This aligns very closely with the Craig H. Neilsen Foundation's mission of supporting both programs and scientific research to improve the quality of life for those affected by and living with spinal cord injury. This specific project will be carried out as part of Challenge Alaska's Paralympic Sport Club program and promoted through partners such as the Spinal Cord Injury Support Group in Anchorage to maximize the potential for independent recreation that it provides.
